The Luxembourg Space Agency, in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Sports, organizes the “Astronaut for a day” competition. The latter aims to promote the space sector to the young generation.

The “Astronaut for a day” contest is an initiative inspired by the Portuguese Space Agency and organized here in Luxembourg, by the Luxembourg Space Agency (LSA). This exceptional project is dedicated to young people aged between 13 and 18 years, dreaming of space and of slipping into the shoes of an astronaut.

What is the end goal of the competition?

Simple: 25 finalists will be selected to be part of the “Astronaut for a day” class, and eventually become space ambassadors in their school community. Also, the class is to experience a zero gravity flight next September 28.

What are the stages of selection for the competition?

The “Astronaut for a day” contest’s selection process is strongly inspired by the actual selection processes for professional astronauts run by space agencies across the world. It will consist of 6 stages:

  1. Application and cover letter
  2. Reasoning and comprehension tests
  3. Physical fitness
  4. Interview
  5. Medical check-up
  6. Parabolic flight

After the first stage, 250 applicants will be selected for the reasoning and comprehension tests; then 125 applicants will go on to the physical fitness stage. A total of 60 applicants will be short-listed for the interview stage. Once this step is achieved, a final selection of 25 finalists – subject to a favorable medical check-up – will eventually experience parabolic flight.

These series of tests are to occur between March and July 2023.

How to apply?

The competition is open to teenagers ages between 13 and 18 years old enrolled in a school in Luxembourg for the school year 2022/2023 and 2023/2024.

Registration is free of charge and open until April 7 on the dedicated contest website
